Richard “Rich” Motzkin is Executive Vice President and Managing Executive of Global Soccer at THE·TEAM (formerly named Wasserman) and one of the most influential figures in modern U.S. soccer representation. A California-educated lawyer who began his career in sports law and served as U.S. Soccer’s first in-house counsel, Motzkin moved into player representation at a time when the American soccer market was still being built. After the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, he founded SportsNet, an agency that became a major platform for representing elite American soccer talent. SportsNet was later acquired by Wasserman in 2006, helping form the foundation of Wasserman’s global soccer business. Motzkin has represented and advised many of the most recognizable names in American soccer, including Landon Donovan, Tim Howard, Alexi Lalas and and has been linked to leading players across the men’s and women’s game such as Weston McKennie. At Wasserman, he has helped guide a global practice focused on contract negotiations, transfers, endorsements, career strategy and long-term player development. His career reflects a rare combination of legal training, federation experience, entrepreneurial agency-building and decades of relationships across MLS, U.S. Soccer and the international football market. Motzkin is widely viewed as a pioneer who helped professionalize soccer representation in the United States and position American players for opportunities on the global stage.
